This is a new experiment. An attempt to capture my songwriting process live, while ensuring that I am backed into a corner where I actually can't give up and go to bed. I've taken my 5-hour energy (extra strength for what that matters), and am ready to get things started. I have a lot on my plate right now ... I am feeling a lot right now. Serenity and anxiousness in equal parts. Time to make the doughnuts.

Let's start by spitballing things I am thinking and feeling right now. Some of them I can use now. Some of them I will use later. Trying to use Kurt Cobain's formula of each song relying mostly on the familiar, with the idea of allowing room for at least one idea or point of view no one has said in song.

Okay, from 50 possible beats, I have narrowed it down to 18 contenders. I have to admit, I feel much more energized with the beats now directly in front of me. Good music gets to me way more than caffeine or 5 hour energy. I am crazy enough to believe I might write something to each of these right now. Maybe if I am lucky I can at least write a few. So you can see what I see, here is my computer screen:

Okay, after freestyling some concepts, and trying to play "match the idea with the beat," I got stuck. So ... took a moment to grab a clean shave (something rare for me) to clear my head. Feeling awake, alert, and energized, I have a new plan:

I am going to place ALL the beats I have access to in a playlist.
I will eliminate any beats that we will definitely not use
I will then press play on the playlist
I will then attempt to write as much of a song as possible while the beat plays
When the next beat comes on, I will write during that beat as much of a song as possible
I will repeat this process until the playlist is finished
I will then repeat the entire process over and over again until a group of songs take shape

Here's hoping it works. I will record each round here.

It's 8 o'clock and the day has just started!!

We are discussing what song to get started. It's gonna be a long night, and it's been a bad day, but things are looking up!

Studio Day 1: Post-Studio Wrap Up & Random Thoughts

It's been about 12 hours since leaving my first day in the Studio for the Valentine and West project. Thought I would share some random thoughts:

+The only one in the studio not satisfied with the track was me. Not uncommon, because I have almost never been satisfied with my final products
+The message was good, real, and personal
+The subject matter was too personal, and it is unlikely that the average listener would relate or be inspired
+The delivery was interesting and creative, but off putting. Need to ride the beat more traditionally
+Got significantly better at doubles and vocal stacking today, but still have a long way to go
+Enjoyed learning how to "screw" vocals (lower pitch), and had a good time toying with vocal effects to get the correct approach
+I wish more producers were adept at sequencing their beats in advance, so that studio time would not need to be spent rearranging tracks to fit song styles
+I do not feel that, if the track were to come on the radio, that I would enjoy it. Must keep in mind that is the ultimate goal.

Studio Day 1: REVISED Pre-Studio Plan

The trick with today is wanting to prove to myself, Micah Bennett (engineer), and those that are waiting on product at the end of the day (Chad Wilkes and Bobby Stamps) that I can knock out a done song in a day. The problem comes in with the fact that my partner, Laura West, is still out of town. So ... with that in mind (and considering the new song I wrote today), I have altered the plan for the first day at Starratt Studios (see the original plan: here).

Once again: Today is going to be a fun day, but a rough day: I need to target my rough points, which include tone, doubles, and ad-libs. For that reason, we are only planning to knock out two songs today. Here's the revised rough schedule for today:

Valentine and West will be recording their first project at Starratt Studios ... one of the best recording studios in the Athens area, having served clients such as: Bubba Sparxxx, Ishues, Herb and Skills, Dubconscious, Rehab, Demun Jones, Mother Jackson, and more.

Starratt Studios sits on five acres of land in Watkinsville, fifteen minutes from the famed music town of Athens, GA. The studio is 1,500 sq. ft. The main tracking room is 20 x 20 ft. with a 14 ft. cathedral ceiling.And a 10 ft. x 10 ft.wood floor. The control room features wood floors and a custom-made wooden console. There are two isolation booths, and a lounge/patio equipped with a kitchenette. The studio is set on a spacious, peaceful 5-acre property--surrounded by oak trees--ten miles outside of Athens.
